Domain Scam From China

Moments ago, I received a questionable email, originating from one Carlson Liu:

Subject: herrbischoff

Dear Manager,

(If you are not the person who in charge of this, please forward this to your CEO, because this is urgent. Thanks!) This is a formal mail. I am Carlson Liu, Senior Manager of a Network Service Company which is the domain name registration center in Chin a. On October 31, 2022, we received an application from Luoke Holdings Ltd requested “herrbischoff” as their internet keyword and China (CN) domain names( herrbischoff.cn/ herrbischoff.com.cn/ herrbischoff.net.cn/ herrbischoff.org.cn).

But after checking it, we find this name conflict with your company name or trademark. In order to deal with this matter better, it’s necessary to send email to you and confirm whether your company have association with this Chinese company or not?

This is so obvious a scam, even before noticing the obscured domain name in the signature. No doubt a clumsy attempt to evade spam filters. Please also savor the confidentiality note at the end.

A quick web search for “carlson.liu@netchina.org.cn” surfaces an apparently long-running scam:

I took some time to compile the most obvious domain names so you don’t have to and updated my blocklist accordingly. There are so many of them that I will amend this list as I work through the backlog and any new domains I come across.
