Self-Hosting Mastodon Is Not a Trivial Task

Pete Brown:

I in no way intend what I am about to say as an indictment of federated services and hosting your own stuff, but I think all the people saying “Companies and organizations should start up their own Mastodon instances” vastly underestimate the degree to which basically every non-tech company ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT WANT to set up and run its own stuff.

Spot on. In my experience since joining up, the intersection of Mastodon users, Linux users and people who can’t seem to understand this is rather extensive. SaaS is a thing not primarily because of potential cost savings (they often are not) but operational flexibility and a desire to externalise the headaches of running infrastructure yourself. Not to speak of the potential resulting legal implications.
